Hello Mr Wolff

Not sure if this swindle would work in top field as given the lie of cards west can hold at the most one honour card assuming NS dont open balanced 11 hcp and from lead defence cant get more than 3 tricks in diamonds if D king is with west. So playing teams east has to surely look elsewhere and the most promising is hearts. So there is nothing wrong in shifting to heart king as at most it may give away overtricks.

best regards

Hi Shantanu
Please permit me.
I presume that you meant that east to shift to hearts at second trick
If east assumes that West holds K of diamonds but continuing diamonds will fetch only three tricks, ( certainly diamond 4 is fourth best and east can see all cards above it , so there is no fourth diamond trick) and wants to shift, then sure declarer must hold hearts A else where are the points for his bid . East is seeing K and Q of hearts in his hand and spade Q J are visible in dummy. South definitely holds A of hearts if he is missing K of diamonds. But there is an extremely tiny clue. If south held J ten and six of diamonds , he would have played ten in tempo , not J . So perhaps there is no point in east shifting to K of hearts at second trick
And Dear Mr Wolff
Perhaps South could have got melodramatic and played K of diamond on East’s return but that should give the game away as east knows for certain that south held three diamonds and his remaining card is J

Hi Folks,

Joe 1’s comment from yesterday applies today and will do so all week I expect. It is little use playing from dummy and then thinking about the false card!

Diamond 4 is fourth best and south can see all cards below it ( not above it as mentioned) and the tiny clue of south playing diamond J is when East returns a diamond at second trick so perhaps not relevant if east shifts to a heart

Hi Shantanu, AVRR & Iain,

Oft times, my experience, even when both partnerships are high class, seem to, at least occasionally, fall for today’s quote.

And although simple deception, especially if time is taken to suspect, can be seen through by one’s own eyes, sometimes we all become careless and fall for a clever ruse and today’s hand is somewhat of a poster child for that failure.

IOW, our great game is so varied that even apparent carefree, even almost self-evident information, needs to be thoroughly checked for substance, otherwise we are subjecting ourselves to the last laugh to be enjoyed by our hated opponents.

Is it worth it to give that extra effort? No doubt it is, especially toiday, but do we always so respond?

No one is obliged to have to answer that embarrassing (when it happens) leading question.
