Hi Bobby,

A very minor point but should declarer play DA and another, especially if West clears spades? He could have singleton K after all.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

Yours is a close question.

Yes, West’s singleton diamond could be the king, which, in turn, would be nothing short of disastrous, if a low diamond by declarer is chosen.

However, since declarer has not taken a spade trick and hearts could lie 5-2, then the flexibility of first leading a low diamond to dummy might come into play for being able to get back and forth between South and North in order to have a much better chance of developing several different potential squeezes for trick #9.

Therefore, it looks to me that a low diamond is only slightly superior since the likelihood of West having exactly the singleton king is indeed a long shot, well over 100 to 1 against.

Anyone who doesn’t mind his head hurting has the go ahead to exactly figure it all out, but it may be prudent to set a time limit for doing so, perhaps a year from next June.
