Hi Bobby,

Would a spade lead actually work though? East might read West’s lead as a singleton when South would dump an honour from KQx and hope for a switch. If South has a decent club holding and those spades then the contract is probably making anyway but there is a real danger of east being on autopilot here.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

Yes, it helps to think like you, always positive when either defending or discarding. However, the decision will be made by a worthy opponent, East, allowing him to stay in control.

Still by falling back on what used to be named a “fish eye coup” declarer might ruff the opening spade lead (in spite of holding the KQx) and then before leading to the next trick, apologize to the opponents and substitute the king (or queen of spades) and comment, “Sorry, I did have one”.

If later, (and you are still alive after the TD has officially allowed your highly unethical maneuver and East has switched to a harmless club, at least, in my scenario) you can buy that TD a drink since he will probably have lost his job because!

ONLY KIDDING! Ha Ha, at least I hope I am.
