Hi Bobby,

On Passed Hand’s spade overcall, any case for 3Sat favourable vulnerability and especially at pairs but maybe teams or rubber bridge too? It might give the oppo the idea that they have rather more assets than they actually do and see them jump overboard, not just be pushed.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

First and foremost, methinks that particular hand would (should) be a classical 2 spade NV jump.

However, against some opponents (especially those who try and be picture perfect with description) a 3 spade preempt might just steal the hand, because the raised level should (MUST) in the eyes of that player have the extra trick necessary to go to the 4 level to compete (even with almost enough to raise hearts to game). IOW, when opponents stay out of close games, your partnership is the winner, since sometimes that game is cold and other times either the opening lead gives it to them, or other defensive error occurs allowing them to make it.

Summing up is simple, when game is bid, the stakes become higher, thus the opponents being done out of chances is an advantage to the defenders.

Yes, there is some contradiction with the above, but bottom line, in any form of our game, I am much happier to either declare, or if having to defend, then let it be a partial.
