Hi Dear Mr Wolff
Regarding last sentence: suppose west led a red suit, south placing almost all high card points with west can run his red suits ( trumps first of course) reducing to four card position. Now, to beat the contract, west must discard at least one top spade retaining two spades and A Q of clubs: perhaps not very difficult but perhaps not easy either

Hi AVRR,

If South runs off all his trumps early on then the diamonds, can’t West come down to SAKx and CA alone? As long as EW don’t do anything silly in spades, then South is off.

I wonder what happens if West had doubled with AKQx x 10xxx QJxx though? I suspect South plays the same way and East eventually gets endplayed if he ruffs a diamond to give South a club trick or he has to reduce to CA alone and the last trump for the last two tricks if he doesn’t ruff a diamond. So the dummy reversal works again.

regards,

Iain

Hi lain
On the eighth card, south knows reasonably well west’s club holding. If west is known to bare club A , he can be thrown in with club else with spade

Hi AVRR & Iain,

Yes, while “dummy reversals” (aka making the declarer hand originally with the fewer trumps, the master trump drawing one who extracts the proverbial teeth from the enemy, there usually still remains other distractions, such as timing, entries, and even occasionally some deception).

It is rare that in the course of even one session of bridge, some element of that well know process, doesn’t greet a declarer, or at the least, a possibility for the best line of play.

Therefore, today’s hand, although more simple than others we have recently featured, does represent an early example of the transition expected when experience starts to improve an ambitious bridge player with advanced learning.

Today’s above comments by both of you tend to delve into what I am trying to get across, so thanks to both of you for your accurate and authoritative posts.
