Hi Bobby,

Good play by South but East is rather culpable; his partner can hardly have DKQ and declarer would surely run the lead round to his hand if he held the DQ butnot the K.

Einstein’s comment is shades of Catch-22, though – brilliant but depressingly accurate.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

No doubt, the failure of East to switch to clubs (when in with the ace of trumps) could instead be a logical lesson, meant for newbies and their responsibility, expressed well by you, to relatively simple bridge logic, manifested at trick one by declarer winning the ace of diamonds in dummy instead of letting it ride to his alleged lady.

Perhaps instead the point of this hand, when West turns up with Q10xx in hearts instead of the 10xx he did possess, might be, beware of advanced experienced types of partnerships, who sometimes defend like they are able to see through the backs of the cards rather than a possible newly coined proverb, “Two wrongs do make a right”.

Also I completely agree with your take about Albert Einstein’s foreboding comment about war and its horrific implications.

However, life itself, the longer one lives it, seems to be full of mankind itself, finding ways to shoot themselves in the foot, rather than to give in, even one iota, to compromised sensibility.
