In response to Modern Age’s question, it seems to me that table presence is one of the more enjoyable and nuanced parts of the game, absent in online games (though Bridgebase can be fun), only half as good with screens, but a main draw in an evening of rubber bridge. We play to be with friends and hopefully come out on top and win twenty bucks or so. Like in “The Gambler”, “Knowing what the cards hold by the way they hold their eyes”, makes it more than a math problem, more skill required.

Hi Joe1,

While I basically and completely agree with you, there are others who consider getting unauthorized information from one’s partner, part of face to face competition, causing it to be illegally obtained, which, if so, is wrong.

Of course, anyone who talks about face to face play and table action would (or, at least should) agree that to do so, negate all the other advantages ftf play should encourage.

Therein is the flaw in the discussion, sometimes not mentioned, but usually just kept as a secret thought.

And, who can argue with that sad possibility? However, to try and purify
computer bridge battling, at least IMO, is next to impossible.

Thanks for initiating this important, but very sensitive, discussion.
