Hi Dear Mr Wolff
Quite an instructive hand highlighting the nuances .But if west elects to lead the time honoured fourth best diamond ( quite natural ), defense prevails only if he passively continues with a club after winning club A or aggressively leads spade ( any spade would do) . But if he continues diamond, declarer romps home

Hi AVRR,

Yes, I fully agree to your comment. First, for the initial choice of a diamond (especially when holding five of them) and of course, not a diamond continuation when the declarer, because of partner’s queen at trick #1, is marked with the knave.

Simple defense, not an attempt for the spectacular, will usually have the best chance, unless the early “tells” are strong and forceful.
