Hi Bobby,
Should Wasted failure to double 2H suggest to West that a heart lead is not necessarily best? A club at T1 would be rather more effective here although if West held (say) Qx(x) or Kx(x) in hearts he might well still lead one.
Regards,
Iain
Hi Dear Mr Wolff and all
Merry Christmas in advance
And east should only play heart ten on lead and having made the mistake of playing A, he must shift to a diamond and defense prevails if declarer makes the mistake of playing second trump as east wins and returns another diamond and EW score one trick in each suit.
Regards
Hi Bobby, AVRR and everyone,
1) Merry Christmas / Happy Holidays etc
2) Wasted should be “East’s” in my post. That’ll teach me to use the mobile phone.
Regards,
Iain
Hi Iain,
I know it is very close to Christmas, but that shouldn’t and doesn’t allow even top level players to play like deities.
If the above is true, only with column’s, sadly not at the table, will incredibly successful plays, especially defensive, where the defenders are only privileged to see their own hands, and early in the play a scant number of partner’s ducats,
to come through with miracles.
However, and in no way, is anyone, especially a bridge lover like you, barred from teaching others the wonders of what might have been, which in turn, may even allow, perhaps once or twice in a lifetime, a play so worthy of note, that will bring either a stampede of congratulations or much worse, a wonder at a tournament, if he had prematurely seen the hand records.
At any rate thanks for your brilliance in recognizing what can be accomplished within our magnificent game.
But to answer your question, not doubling 2 hearts will only not say anything particularly other than I would like to have bid 2 hearts myself, showing a little extra than a mere opening bid.
However Merry Xmas and all that goes with for you and your no doubt, beautiful family.
Also perhaps all these modern gadgets like mobile phones are unnecessary, especially for people like me, who has never owned one, probably only because of laziness.
Hi AVRR,
And Merry Xmas back at you, but perhaps not from a bridge partner on this hand who had only the same three points he held on this hand, but this time the Kxx of hearts.
However, if your third hand wish on opening lead happened, the declarer would be sure to thank EW for being in the Christmas spirit.
Hi Bobby,
You can always claim that not owning a mobile phone isn’t technophobia at all but environmental idealism – mining coltan (the raw material for swipe screen technology) has created a fair amount of damage in the DR Congo. There is a rather grim documentary called “Blood Coltan” available which makes for depressing viewing. I haven’t updated mine for some time, using an old one of my daughter’s when my last one died. Re-use, repair and recycle is still a worthwhile maxim. Mind you, someone might then argue that I’m destroying jobs in a poor country as a result so you probably can’t win here!
Regards,
Iain
Hi Iain,
Reminds me of an old saying which went something like “To every point carefully explained, there is always a counter point”.
But possibly not, if you just as carefully round it off. MERRY CHRISTMAS! and may all your finesses work, except, of course, the hands you underbid.
