Hi Bobby,
If EW don’t bid so much do NS actually reach game here as South passed 2H? Also, is there any case for East bidding 3C over 2H especially as Six looks like a hood holding? Finally, do things change if East unblocked in spades? I suspect not.
Regards
Iain
Hi Iain,
No doubt, little of what could be called high-level bridge discipline became evident in the bidding, but this hand is included only because of the unusual timing, not to mention the under ruffing necessary for defensive success.
While East might have offered three clubs at his second turn around, both his minimum high cards, and him not having side shortness likely kept him quiet.
Of course, the main reason for including this hand is, of course, the unusual defense required, certainly not the intention of rubber stamping the less than expert bidding discipline.
As for the defense, we took pains to disallow East’s inability to take his partner off his eventual throw-in, in order to accent what used to be a former bridge joke, “Underruffing is one of the curses of the game”, a play, when seldom necessary, but even when it would, be unlikely for Mollo’s Mrs. Gugenheim (or even others who might be defending) to make, even in a month of Sunday’s. in spite if it being necessary for success.
