Hi Bobby,

The defence to 3H needs care here if N sells out. SK led presumably, an North takes the first or 2nd spade to play another spade. If South ploughs on regardless with a spade (and some players do), East wins, draws trumps and gets a diamond away on a club. So South takes the 2nd spade and plays DK. East ducks setting a trap as another diamond lets East win. draw trumps and play a third diamond thus not losing a club. There are doubtless other ramifications worth exploring here.

So, at pairs or BAM 3S-1 may not be too bad here. Even so, the S10 from A109 (easy) or even A108 (less so) would be a very effective false card by East.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

Nothing much more I can say except you do not speak (or in this case, write), with “forked tongue”.

Feel, while at the table. will, most times, lead the experienced veteran to victory in these hard nosed situations. And usually, the same type of “feel” available to know when to bid 3 spades and when not to. Nothing more, not much less!

Thanks for digging deep to discuss this difficult to bring up subject, since many relative newbies start out unknowing in this highly valued talent, which no doubt, play a very large part in winning.

Agreed Bobby! Don’t be afraid to speak up!
