HI Bobby,

West could have made life easier by leading the H8 at T1 here, but people do stick to agreements.

regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

No doubt your comment is, at least to me, more to the point, than possibly first thought.

Leading 2nd from top with more or less worthless holdings has risen in popularity. My guess as to why, not from any other reason than sometimes a card as high as a ten (or even a nine) could come into play for its high card value, so why not refrain from wasting it while POSSIBLY but not CERTAINLY, properly signalling partner.

Obviously a potentially valid excuse, but when it also can be more misleading than the highest card held, that fact IMHO, can override the above, especially when holding a major honor or honors, like here with the ace of spades in tow.

Perhaps I am playing results, and no doubt I am at the very least, guilty with today’s hand. However, my experience, at least the way I conveniently remember it, has tended to eschew the second highest in favor of thel higher one, up through the nine, but not the ten, and by doing so, was never, to my recollection, sorry for doing so.

Of course, I would have preferred having the next ranking card such as the 8 from 98 or even the 7 from 87, but informing one’s OX (slang for partner), the obvious (to you but not necessarily to him) nothing holding, and, of course, trying to avoid what could have happened in today’s column hand, is more likely than originally thought, representing a potential losing habit.
