If South does take the first spade, he should still get some limited credit for leading the small diamond – the J makes things very obvious.

Hi Iajn,
Thanks for often including reasons for smaller factors others often decline to consider, but in retrospect, and eventually at the very least, help determine success from failure.
Doing so sometimes causes a minor problem, in the terms of being awkward, but likely needed to be done to give a better chance for making (or, while on defense), defeating it.
Reminds me of an oldie song title usually sung by a female, “Little Things Mean A Lot” which begins “Throw me a kiss from across the room, say I look nice when I’m not”.
