Was East really right to cash the HA here? It certainly didn’t harm declarer and might have conceded a valuable tempo.

Hi Iain,
No doubt East was at the very least, slightly confused, and perhaps suspected declarer to have opened a 4-5-3-1 third seat hand for the spade lead, not envisioning playing a game
contract instead.
Or instead, just playing his partner for switching to a diamond only because it was closest to his thumb.
Take your pick and yes it gave declarer a better chance, but plays like that often occur, sadly taking away the ability to only play where all players were blessed with
almost always making the correct and justifiable play, allowing the whole table to always gravitate to everyone playing logically. Good luck in that happening, sometimes even at the champion’s table.
