Hi Bobby,

If West bids 4S then doubles 5D maybe East can be the star, overtake the SK and play a club back. Seeing 52 cards does make life easy though!

Hi lain
Since east doesn’t know about west’s diamonds, perhaps he cannot overtake. The blame squarely rests with west. for letting the contract through. Once spade K held, west can assure setting of the contract as he has two almost certain diamond tricks but if he allows declarer to shorten trumps, one of the trump tricks may evaporate. So shift is mandatory. It doesn’t matter which rounded suit. If west leads heart, even if declarer finesses it is not going to help him

This is still another hand from the infamous 2018 Slush Cup!

I sat West, of course, and the bidding began as it did in the column hand. At our table, however, South sat for 5C!!

Partner led the AS, of course, and then followed with the 2S to begin the defensive crossruff: Me to overruff dummy, diamond ruff, another over-ruff, etc.

When I followed helplessly with my other HS, declarer snorted so fatuously that I thought HH had sat down at my table!

He finessed the JH, ruffed a H, and played three rounds of trump.

That damn Slush Cup!

Hi AVRR,

I was posting strictly tongur-in-cheek. All the best for 2023 though.
