Matchpoints
You hold 762 AJ5 10432 A84
You are on lead against 3NT.
Their auction was 1NT 2C 2H 3NT
Your 2D lead is taken by Declarer’s J
Declarer now leads a small Club, from his KJ62 holding, toward Dummy’s Q10.
As it turned out, Partner holds J83 K742 75 9753.
So rising with the CA and leading the H5 gets the defense four tricks allowing no overtricks.
Should any strong defender be able to work out this defense?
Thanks

Hi Clarksburg,

I think that would depend on a detailed look at dummy but I can’t imagine it being easy even then.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Clarksburg,

Trying to out perform Iain’s answer, only if you have still not played, took time out to tune into the Aces site, pinch yourself to make sure you are not dreaming, be prepared to not only get a scornful look from whomever is declarer, immediately after the hand is quitted and then listened to him ask you, Were you here yesterday when these hands were pre-dealt?

If so, you should definitely rise and lead a low heart, muttering under your breath (but still to maybe be heard), that this is the card I should have led, so you would be sure to lead it back.

And yet even the above, if properly acted out, would not convince most judges that there has ever been cheating in bridge.

Thanks to both.
Post mortem evidence:
In this very large on-line game, only a handful of players went up with the CA.
And in every case they returned the low Heart.

Hi Clarksburg,

Since in my sometimes not humble opinion, you received the important evidence you may or may not have been seeking.

There were exactly five cheating pairs in the room, (unless some of them were just kibitzing) or, if one of the opening leaders had not been yet born, but thought to be, or had sadly, rather lost one or more of his fingers previously.

Different types of cheaters have unfortunately always been playing, but for practical purposes the results speak for themselves.
