Hi Bobby,
On BWTA, everyone plays TO doubles of pre-empts nowadays (although about 40 years ago I played 3x4x where double of 3m was TO, double of 3M was penalties and 4C over 3M was TO, 3N being to play in all these cases). I was curious about your comment on 4D (if they play it as natural). I’m trying to think of an alternative sensible use of the bid here.
Regards,
Iain
Sadly, when this hand was originally played at the Slush Cup, the South at our table simply raised to 4N.
Hi Iain,
There would originally be little harm to play an immediate 4 diamond overcall for penalties, but only if North would (and, of course) convert it to 4NT, the bid used against Jim2, so that he could share a tie for bottom with the other blokes.
In the absence of playing 4 diamonds for penalty, where in Lower Slobbovia that convention had been universally played, they are now thinking of changing it to showing a 1-1-6-5 good hand, in order to be prepared for the hand in question.
No sleepy thinkers there, since the prize for last place overall is to wake up next to Lena.
Hi Bobby,
May depend on the Lena tbf. Lena the hyena does not appeal but a German musician friend of mine is also called Lena and is quite different. She might wreck a few Lower Slobbovian stereotypes.
Regards,
Iain
Hi Iain,
Welcome Iain, to the people of a certain age, who remember Al Capp (I believe) of “L’il Abner” fame, who produced “Lena the hyena” (a real beauty, NO)!
If your Lena played bridge, she could partner up with Jim2 and perhaps eventually cure his deadly bridge malady, TOCM, but only if he took percentage finesses to which he has never taken an improper one. Sadly, not one of which worked except the ones who allowed him to make games, and slams to which he should have, like he did, not bid them, but they were all lucky makes.
