Hi Everyone,
How many may say that West’s 3 spade vulnerable preempt vs. NV has something to do with his dangerous jump to 3 spades and may later say that the Q10x had some bearing on his judgement.
Nothing really worthwhile but at least an excuse to go right.
Hi Bobby,
It is the decadence of overcalls in the modern age as nobody tried for the penalty available off 3Sx – 2H, 2D, 1C, 1D ruff and the trump ace – nice and safe 800.
Hard luck to 2nd declarer – odds biting another good player in the backside.
Regards,
Iain
Also with D being 5-3, you just know what’s awaiting Jim2 – when hearts don’t drop his only hope is to apologise to partner up front…
It’s true! It’s true! It’s allllll true!!
Hi Iain & Jim2,
That is why it is sometimes more fun to write about our favorite game than to play it. When the Yellow Brick road leads the way, all eyes are fixed on the right percentage play and/or defense, not the lucky non-percentage view.
No Scarecrow you, Jim2 nor Cowardly Lion either, but your results were always manipulated by the Wizard himself, Frank Morgan, behind his drapes. Dream or no dream, we need to accept our fate made clear by all the “wicked witches” and the “Tin Woodsman” looking for his heart, instead feel like winners not losers, when taking the “current when it serves”, but still “losing our fortunes”. “Your day will come, but likely not today, even with being granted the ability to fly “Over the Rainbow”.
Hi Iain,
Yes 800 is available, but what if the preemptor is also looking at the vulnerability and has a mammoth freak, two fewer high card points but an 8-0-5-0 distribution and his partner has enough trump. Then, all hell will break loose, with the ‘bad guys” enabling a likely huge swing forward.
Such is life with the high-level bridge devotees. It is never necessary nor forced to secure “off the charts” great results, it is only done by those who are, at least on any one hand, one full step ahead of their opponents.
One expression has always enchanted me, “It rattles in the countryside and rumbles in the “dell”, about how some bridge genius’ seems to almost always command the table with his superior psychology.
Aren’t we all looking to become that performer?
Hi Bobby,
Thanks for the Wizard of Oz reference which reminded me of times where I’ve thought of partner (or some have thought about me) “If you only had a brain!”
regards,
Iain
