Hi Bobby,

If East holds SKQxx and Dxx then he mustn’t cover the SJ to lead South down the garden path here. Much depends on South’s knowledge of West’s bidding habits though – will he dredge up 1S over 1H with SQ98xx xx Qxx xxx or similar. I might well do so, and I think there is a trend towards lighter replies, but not everyone will do so.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

Just as your bridge talk concerning the play and defense of this hand is crisscrossing in nature, but highly accurate in knowledge and teaching, the guessing of current trends in bidding and, in what stage is a current opponent or opponents, will likely determine the outcome.

To be frank, as you suggest, the above is quite a difficult job to win, at least on a consistent basis. Therefore, arriving at an accurate answer as to what stage any one player or even partnership belongs, is indeed difficult to even guess, much less to be confident.

However, while discussing that poker like aspect of our beloved game, certainly YES is the answer to psychological knowledge of habits of particular opponents, therein, allowing that phase of knowledge to be a valuable tool for consistent success.
