HI Bobby,

There is potential for a Grosvenor Coup here by East. After winning the DA he switches to the C9. South “knows” that East can’t have the CK or he would have played it so decides to play a small club from hand rather than the Q which makes life easy. More details here:

Hi Dear Mr Wolff
As the cards lay perhaps south prevails, brilliant return of club K from east notwithstanding. He drops Q on K. East must continue clubs to deny south late entry to dummy for cashing diamonds. Dummy wins finesse, south cashes diamonds, remaining heart winner, spade tops and throws east in with spade for stepping stone to dummy. The guardian angels of south nicely placed ten of clubs in dummy, doubleton heart in east hand and doubleton spade in west hand : precisely what is required. And had south ducked the lead, he would have invited doom despite the favourable placement of the cards

And in lighter vein:
For declarer, though it was a Jam yesterday and may be a Jam tomorrow, but today, it is a different Jam( say mixed fruit) and with the grin of a Cheshire Cat ( again Lewis Carroll ) after chalking up the game

Good try, AV, but east simply continues clubs. True, declarer can throw a diamond, but he still has a high one in his hand, blocking the suit, and limiting him to 2 winners in each suit.

South should lead out the DQ on the second trick, but any East who can find the Merrimack Coup is going to be able to count to the 21 HCP declarer would have if that was a true card, and rise on the first diamond.

Whoops! No, stepping stone squeeze. Very nice.

Hi AVRR & Bob,

Typical bridge discussion between bridge addicts leads to first point and counterpoint, but then stepping stones to concession. Even the loser becomes gratified with the result, along with all of us who followed along the path to a confirmed realization of how really great our game has become or possibly always was, but not until our intellect allowed us to carry on.

Thanks to all who played a part.
