Hi Bobby,

Even fantasy contracts all seem to come crashing down as long as West hits upon the key play early. 4S from the North side? Assuming East leads a diamond, West still defeats the contact by knocking out the KC early. Here he would have to avoid the additional pitfall for leading back his singleton heart at trick 2 in addition to avoiding a second diamond lead.

3NT from either side? Same problem, avoid clearing the diamonds early (one is all right), knock out the club K. Declarer can clear the AS and set up the QD as the ninth trick, but in the end, the defenders can take three club tricks to defeat the contract yet again.

Poor South. Just exchange one of those clubs for a low spade and all those contracts succeed. Rotten luck that he ran into such an evil hand constructor. 🙂

Hi Bobby,

One ghastly possibility presents itself, although I suspect I’d rebid 4H on the South hand although it is too strong to open 4H. What if South has (say) 10x AKQJxxx Qxx Q? OK, that is very contrived but you’d never hear the last of it as West.

Regards,

Iain

TBF, I’d have expected East to bid 2C with SA and CJ108xx in that case.
