Hi Bobby,

Would you still bid 2 of the second suit if it were a minor or would you bid 2S especially at pairs? I have a feeling that bidding 2S on AQJ10xx 109 A98x Q would catch partner with something like x Jxx KJ10xxx Axx though.

Regards,

Iain

Shouldn’t E hold up at trick one, keep declarer out of dummy?

And welcome back.

Love the quote.

Hi Dear Mr Wolff
To start with: it is indeed delightful to see the column back
And the unblock perhaps should be automatic. It provides a vital entry to dummy. In case east elects to shift, south has top nine tricks as long as diamonds break.
But just thinking, the hand could get very interesting if dummy’s heart J is swapped with one of east’s hearts. South of course cannot unblock and the contract hinges on bringing at least four club tricks. Assuming east wins lead and returns heart, If both clubs and diamonds break, south will have twelve tricks but that happens only in utopia. Perhaps south should lead a low club from hand hoping east has singleton Q/ doubleton Q 10 and hope west doesn’t play J from J9 / west with singleton nine.
Request your opinion
Best regards
PS: really wonder how you manage to post those captivating quotes with so much variety every day. I wish I too could but know that I can’t! . Your diligence is profoundly admirable

Hi Joe1,

Sadly that isn’t going to work as declarer can underplay the HJ and lead a club. Works if East has A10xx and dummy has J9 though.

The quote reminds me of a friend who, in a world containing so many grey people, is like an explosion in a paintbox.

Iain

Hi Iain,

Methinks your comment proves Johann Von Goethe’s apt quote since any real discussion of the good and not so application of bidding a lower 4 card medium suit rather than rebidding a higher 6 card better suit is speculative at best but worth considering. FWIW I would only rebid the major, score it up and change the topic when that action became newsworthy.

And no doubt your second topic could result in something ultra colorful.

Hi Joe1,

Perhaps. but ducking might not result in what is best for EW if declarer’s King of hearts instead, morphed into the two minor suit jacks.

However, when declarer then claimed his game when the queen of clubs was then played on the next trick, perhaps a quick throw in by East with his remaining cards might never allow West to know what happened and saved a jury convicting a bridge player of murder, although to me I think it was justifiable homicide making West not guilty of any crime.

Yes, I know the hearts are blocked, but West upon winning his king of hearts dutifully switched to a spade. allowing EW to take the first eleven tricks when declarer, I guess stupidly, rose with the king.

Hi AVRR,

Thanks for your very worthwhile and as usual, complimentary comments allowing our quote machine to do its work, having to learn to play bridge and thus adapting all worthwhile future efforts from all famous authors to our favorite game. On sale at Woolworth for a nickel or a dime.

PS: Those days are likely as far gone as possible and equal to a void in partner’s trump suit, when made dummy.
