Hi Bobby,

Do support doubles (if played) affect your view on BWTA? Suppose you bid 1H, LHO bids 2D and partner doubles not to show 3H but probably 4S (maybe 3 good ones) and a wish to bid on? TBF, if LHO bids 2D over 1H and partner passes, you can always double 2D if it comes round to you.

Regards,

Iain

I have to say, though, that I’d be very tempted to double at the table and get the hand off my chest.

Hi Iain,

I’m sad to say, I do not like “support doubles” and often, in traffic (oppt’s bid), but I have no trouble raising with three, if that appears to be “in the cards”. There are many 2 way streets with bridge bidding and a significant minus is allowing those ugly opponents to be guaranteed often the beginning of a distribution read-out when we wind up on defense, which with contested bidding (and it always is) it is just too much information passed on (especially when a defender has 3 of them and a support dbl. has occurred with the partner choosing another suit). Worse, it influences, not only the defense but also the bidding when an opponent may then know his partner, usually unfortunately, gets early information that his partner also has three of them.

The above was first noticed years ago when support doubles was quite the rage, but since then, it has somewhat quietly been blackballed by many.
