Wow, East’s mistake really did leave the door open for a miracle make. I’ve been looking for a while now and I just don’t see another way to make the hand. Even getting the clubs right does not seem to help. In the end, the trump promotion on the fourth diamond seems inevitable if only East did not open the door.

Given that, did South really have anything to lose by, as the quote suggests, exhibiting just a bit more credulity?

Hi Bobby,Given that East played the 7S on the JS,West might have taken a view on East’s spade holding being xx and played a sec spade after KS and gives East a ruff when in with AH..with third spade..the Ace of trumps allows West time to reset the defence instead of a third diamond. Then again we would have missed your subtle point of finessing the Diamond Five…twist and turn…of a bridge hand.

Hi Bobby,

My favourite gambit or coup. See also this for more details:

Hi Jeff, Patrick, and Iain,

Yes, bridge does offer a real chance to especially cater to incidental low points exhibited usually by defenders, wasting taking advantage of mammoth mistakes such as allowing
count signals to give away the then worth of a medium spot card, either because of its moving up the rank, by either previous count signals or simply the unlikely strength, usually established by not keeping track of the specific gone cards already played.

And not necessarily because of the famous Grosvenor gambit. Numbers, numbers and more numbers could be the opening topic for any bridge teacher, when greeting a new group of students, getting ready to learn about our always challenging enterprise simply called only BRIDGE. However, in some ways that feature of bridge learning has also been challenged during the bridge student’s youth, often truthfully indicating that student’s aptitude for reaching his or her likely penchant for shining as bright as possible as they learn the basics of our worthwhile competition.

However the good news is that the teacher is not talking about the mathematics involved with creating atomic energy, but only the much less complicated task of low level numbers,
but ever present, almost with every hand dealt in and with our beloved game.
