Hi Patrick,

To answer whether you should lead a club rather than a spade while defending 5 hearts, it is indeed a difficult decision. The bidding should probably ward off a spade lead and if so, clubs is a distinct possibility, but suggesting it and actually doing it are two different things.

Finally, yes I think it probably the thing to do, but be prepared for a backlash if it turns out wrong. Not a good reason to not lead a club, but only a special decision, made often by some players, but methinks,, in this particular case, as indeed brilliant. Thanks for asking!

Hi Bobby,Many thanks again for your advice and kind words which can only help us become better bridge players and in turn we can help others too..especially these days. I have returned to playing more bridge F2F and it’s good to see fellow bridge players again.

Hi Bobby,

I’m glad you’re back although I keep losing columns dated after 12th or `13th September, then seeing the full column back again. Curious!

regards,

Iain

Hi again Patrick,

From the first days we communicated (no doubt several to many years ago), you have always represented whatever the best there is in both loving bridge and even more important, in living life.

Although we are not likely to ever be face to face, I have always regarded it as a very special honor for me to know you. Never change and by not, will always
be thought of in the same vein as being doubled and redoubled and wind up making an overtrick!.

Yes, it is especially pleasing to hear about your return to playing bridge F2F.

Hi Iain,

Although I’m not speaking with any knowledge of why or any other type of info, it is indeed possible that only one person knows the proper procedure and if that person is gone (for whatever reason) we become
void (with no trumps which win).

Perhaps a substitute column handler was experimenting (past month) and left his or her droppings.
