Hi Bobby,

The BWTA question reminded me of something I encountered last Thursday playing 4 card majors. Opposite a passed partner, I opened 1H with AKx QJ108xx Jxx A. Pard bids 1S and, against silent oppo, now what? 2H, 3H, 2S, 3S or even an overly imaginative 2D? Any thoughts here as I can see problems with all of them although at the table almost anything would have worked.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

First, cross off two diamonds as my rebid just because the rules provide a lesser number for their value and BTW also, it is one horrible choice. Second, because my hearts tell me to enjoy the eight, especially if that choice becomes trump, I’ll gamble a 3 heart jump. With certain partners (the few I trust) would probably not bid one spade with only 4 medium ones, but still feel my task is to bid what I see, rather than guess what partner possesses.

2nd choice three spades. As good lawyers have learned to say, “nothing further”.

Hi Bobby,

After squirming I bid 3S on the basis that I know we’ve got a fit there (and horribly awarethat [pard might have (say) HKx and SJxxx. Partner had a very cautious moment when passing holding QJxxx 9x AK Jxxx so 4S (and 4H) posed few problems after a diamond lead and an early heart play.

Regards,

Iain
