Happy Thanksgiving to Bobby and all, we have much to be thankful for, including the this site, a special part of my day, thanks to everyone

Hi Bobby,

Surely NS have only 4 tricks off 3N with the hand as shown. Fair though if North has (say) KJ9x in diamonds and can surround West’s 10xx.

What am I missing here?

Regards,

Iain

Hi Everyone,

Today’s column has become an embarrassment, since nine tricks in NT by EW are duck soup. Whether he should chance bidding it and, if doubled, stay with it, will be another story and up to West’s nerves, but that is another story and apologies are very much in order.

Furthermore the simple removal of the nine of diamonds from West would have righted
the ship, but perhaps it was scheduled to be there, but had a mind of it’s own and vanished.

“Otherwise, I enjoyed the play” said Mrs. Lincoln.

And I thought I was always going to enjoy writing about our game, but shocking errors are so much more blatant than playing errors, since all fifty two are completely visible.

Hi Bobby,

I wouldn’t worry about it – I’ve done far w9orse with my posts than misplacing the D9 although I don’t like the card. My Dad was Scots and the D9 is “The Curse of Scotland”. Allegedly the duke of Cumberland (later nicknamed Butcher) wrote the order to round up and execute Highland fugitive soldiers after the battle of Culloden on the back of that card The only cheering thought is that he was supposedly scammed at Whist by the Duke of Cumberland coup where he held AKQJ AKQJ AK KJ9 and his opponent bet he could make all 13 tricks with clubs as trumps. Of course RHO has 5 small clubs and no diamonds while LHO has DQ10xxxxxx and CAQ10xx. The details, as they used to say in school textbooks when I was young, are left as an exercise for the reader.

Have a good Thanksgiving on your side of the pond!

regards,

Iain

I get the feeling that Machiavelli would have been a terrific bridge player…

Just a hunch…
