Hi Iain,

Every now and then, especially when declaring, a hand will appear which, even as early as trick one, the bidding and opening lead allows declarer a more or less open book as to where both the opponent’s high cards are located and, as is here, the most likely, soon to determine, close to the specific 26 card distribution, plus, and, of course, the high card location. Today’s hand is an excellent example of such a phenomenon and as early as trick three, when thankfully West follows to declarer’s second high spade with the ten or knave, the correct way to continue. It just becomes a question of how many hearts East was dealt, with two likely being the number to begin a smile (inwardly of course), but also being able to win against only one.

Leaving me to only express one more truism. If declarer is a fast thinker, and our great game provides that as an usual condition precedent for reaching to the stars, when West contributes the ten of spades on declarer’s third trick, positive bridge thoughts then begin to appear to this deserving declarer.

Hi Bobby,

If you were a little more balanced on BWTA (say 6-3-2-2 or even 6-3-1-3) any case for punting 3NT? This could be one of those hands where 9 tricks are the limit.

Regards,

Iain
