Hi Bobby,

A classic reminder of the need to have a good hard look at T1. OK, dummy can’t actually play the wrong card here but most declarer’s would take T1 and then think – too late! 5D is easier but how to get there? If South doubles 3S I suppose N could try an imaginative (or maybe madcap) leap to 4N offering a choice of minors.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

Almost all the time your immediate critique of the current hand either leads to the correct line or, at the very least, suggests it. Therein, at least IMO, offers an ability to claw one’s way to the correct conclusion, even if it happens to be “ducking” the ace, as declarer, when having only a singleton in dummy. Assuming a relative beginner is kibitzing, his attention would immediately be raised, that is, if he hadn’t already picked up his coat and has suddenly left the room.

Also, thanks to you, for also considering the bidding, a venture which becomes an important sideshow, but one which often is neglected when the right play takes the spotlight.
