Hi Dear Mr Wolff
Just a passing thought. Suppose declarer Knowing that east certainly has at least one if not both top hearts, decides to play low from dummy on lead . If east takes eye off the ball and plays small, defense collapses. A thoughtful east overtakes K and leads low spade to take the contract down. Nothing ventured, nothing gained and perhaps in tune with day’s quote, God too would help those who think

HI AVRR,
Nice point but West can still be the star though by playing the S8 at T2 which East must duck. How many West’s would think of that, though?
Regards,
Iain
Hi AVRR,
You need to rent yourself out, so that top-flight bridge is played at almost every table instead of only occasionally. And, in searching to get your new business started, you need to stipulate just how many intercepts you’ll furnish on the house.
Hi Iain,
Perhaps the official bridge rules should allow one defender one comment to his partner after the defense has played to trick one, but that only comment should always be, “please think before you act”.
Although that specific rule won’t ever pass muster, the concept should, by defenders automatically thinking it out, especially early in the defense when one defender, or the other has yet to fail. IOW, that early situation, particularly on defense, arises enough times to make the wait, worth the time spent. No doubt, a confidence builder.
I got a bottom board for that defense when the actual hand was dealt in the 2021 Slush Cup. The North and East hands have not been changed, but South held:

Hi Jim2,
Ever seen the “Four Yorkshiremen” sketch from the UK (originally in the 1960s I believe but later done for “The Secret Policeman’s Ball” – an Amnesty International concert in the late 1970s. It’s about life not bridge but may resonate.
Regards,
Iain
