Hi Bobby,
I sympathise with perfect fit’s predicament as my high-level judgement is suspect nowadays (r maybe just ineffective) as shown by another hand from last Thursday. Love all pairs, I held AJ8 K109xx QJ10x x but I’m 4th in hand. LHO 1C (natural, 4cm), pard bids 2S WJ, RHO bids 3H so I bid 4S. 5C from LHO, 5S from partner (!) and then RHO (a quite weak player) has a long think and bids 6C. Your go (I hit it course).
Regards,
Iain
Hi Iain,
At least to me, I would have also doubled, but only to keep partner from saving in 6 spades
to which it figures to be, at the very least down 1 and likely on average, about 2 or perhaps an unlucky 3. However, my guess on the opponent’s chances while we play spades is about 101/2 tricks on average for us. IOW, likely down 1 at five, with a distinct possibility of two.
Yes, who specifically are the opponents, may change my views and again yes, that fact becomes crucial on these types of decisions.
I also fully realize that my numbers may be such that I am contradicting what I should be doing, but, if so, I can now claim age for that costly distortion.
Since results now are totally meaningless, ain’t we got fun?
Hi Bobby,
Thanks for that and partner (the same scratch partnership as in the other hand I sent) had been “at it” slightly on this occasion having decided that 109xxxxx None 9xxx xx was a WJO here – compare that with AK109xx x xx 9xxx which he had on the other hand. Maybe I should have smelled a rate when he bid 5S but I cheerfully hit 6C. Dummy had KQx QJxxx (!) Ax KJx so the spade lead set up a discard for declarer’s 3rd heart in Axx (he’d not bothered to support hearts with 7 clubs), the H finesse wrks after trumps are drawn s 6C doubled is +1. TBF, on a spade lead 6C is always cold for +1 and the X only cost 1 match point. 6S X is minus 4 if they find the D ruff and partner admitted he’d been tempted to run but decided to face the music. It wasn’t a strong field but the EW pair will dine out on that for a while.
Would you bid at all on the hand with 7 spades at LA (3S perhaps) or let sleeping dogs lie and hope the distribution messes the oppo up?
Regards,
Iain
