Hi Bobby,

Interesting choice by North going for 9 tricks not 10. I wonder how often slavish obsession with 8 card fits misfires on such hands, especially of the 4-4 variety? I accept that they can often be better but I would never bother with Stayman on (say) a 3433 13 count with HJxxx opposite a 15-17 1NT. It is all too likely to find partner with HQxxx and a side Ace to lose while any 4-1 break will be trouble. I can naturally compose hands to shoot this example down tbf.

regards

Iain

Hi Iain,

Thee & me both seem to be interested in the why in bridge, the result for both of us also seems to be why.

Regarding the eight card major suit fit choice against the nine trick NT is tricky enough, without trying to delve deep. Therefore all of us should wait until our choice is the winner, and then sound off to which, I have succeeded many times. but sadly, all of
them, were only myself. Better off to just bridge it, whatever that means..
