Hi Bobby,

I wholeheartedly agree with your approach on “against the grain”‘s query. It is all too easy to wind up in a fragile fit while even HAKxx may not work that well if the trumps break 4-1 which could easily happen.

There is a BOLS bridge tip recommending playing the hand yourself when you have a long strong suit instead of looking for the theoretical advantages of a 4-4 (or similar) fit. The only annoying part is that partner has stolen the contract and the fun by opening 1C!

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

Yes it is always fun to find a way to play the hand, instead of Dumbo, and doing so with some bridge science backing, makes it easier. However, with certain steady partnerships, at least up to then, possibly will let you know that he needs the practice, rather than to fly to others to which he knows not who.

As to your Bols tip information, if applied, the theoretical advantages you mention could fall off considerably, the minute one thinks that AJxx opposite partner’s raise, fills the bill.

Other than that, your advice appears to be rock solid, but how that plays out with our game and your possible soon to not be partner, might be left to him, not you
can be misconstrued.
