There are so many hands where failing to cover a 9 or a 10 lets declarer succeed that I generally need a good reason to not cover a 9 or 10. What are your thoughts on covering 9s and/or 10s from random holdings?

Hi Steve,

Just too large an attempted subject to say where or when, but, and of course, the answer is likely the promotion of under cards one step, identical to covering honors, also, but only occasionally to unblock or even possibly to foreclose that card to partner.

When faced with the choice, it becomes an excellent way for relatively new players, interested in whirling upward, to see the majesty of what is accomplished, which becomes like a welcome letter to the finer points of our often underestimated great
competition.

Thanks for your post and the spirit in which it was brought to all of our attention.

Hi Steve, Bobby,

Zia Mahmood’s Bols bridge tip was interesting here (if they don;t cover, they don;t have it) at least when the lead was from dummy. He have examples with slightly higher cards (assuming there is no reason to assume declarer is particularly long in the suit) such as Jx on table and you sitting over it with Qx, Qxx and Qxxx(x). He pointed out that it is almost always right to cover in the first two cases and often in the 3rd (e.g. declarer has A108(x)). I suspect the principle could be applied here but, as usual, the devil is in the detail.

Regards,

Iain
