D honours split (or both onside) would be 3/4 of the time while H3-3 is 36%. If this hand was played at pairs, might it be better to cash out for 8 tricks and hope somebody did something daft or that the rest of the field went more off? I accept this proves your view that pairs is a bit perverse at times.

Not that it matters, but I’m pretty sure South’s bid over 2C was 2S (not 2H as in the diagram)

I think you misread it – North transferred with 2D. Mind you, the way I played last night, partner would have been happy if that had been the limit of my errors.
