Hi Bobby, Could you please advise on a possible sequence for reaching the grand on this hand from online: North QJ73 KQJ9743 A8 Void–South AKT98 AT 72 AQT3. Our sequence went South 1S North 4C S 4H N 6S(bad bid by me).Pass out.We play Rkcb 1430 as well.

I am not Our Host, but I confess to having admiration for 5N over 4H.

OTOH, RKCB would show 1 or 4 which, if I trusted it to be 4, would let me bid 7N since I could count 14 tricks.

Hi Patrick,

I’m not sure about 4C here over 1S. If you’replaying an old fashioned jump shift that might be better and partner will soon realise it i at least a small slam and maybe a grand. It could also start 1S 3H 3S (plenty in hand) 5C 5H (surely HA and not shortage) 5N 7S. I’ve even bypassed BW that way.

Regards,

Iain

Hi jim2, Good 2 hear from you. If South had Axxxxx void Qxx KQJx, and after 4N by u..5C(1/4)? If u bid 5S and South bids 6S (with 4) u can bid 7S..

Patrick CheuSeptember 9th, 2024 at 8:51 pm

Hi Iain, Your sequence has great merit if 3H is the strong jump..and not weak or splinter or other…but am still worry about the trump suit as regards A/K re Kxxxxx or Axxxxx…or do u think South would not cue 5H unless holding AK?

Patrick CheuSeptember 9th, 2024 at 8:55 pm

Hi Iain again, With Kxxxx and Axxxx and Ace of Hearts, me thinks he would still cue 5H on your sequence..I stand to be corrected.

Hi Patrick, Jim2, & Iain,

While first talking about and then giving winning advice, especially about expert levels of bidding and, of course, play, the only certain thing will often start “I’m not sure about”X”, It then, if everyone is seriously necessary for the talking head or heads is to take
time out to write down the problem, especially when converting a small slam into a large one two basics, all first round controls, and at least 12 3/4s known tricks with perhaps more, but never less. Of course, if winning or money now is more important than looking
good then that should be privatized. Yes it is easy to suggest or even demand, but considerably a different thing when challenging a relatively new partnership.

Leadership is always a necessary commodity, without which, no matter the strength of knowledge, will never be enough to get an 100% agreement, when talk only becomes just that, and no more.

Yes, these small slams advertised, and then raised make good reading and, no doubt,
belong in the game, but one one Wong may cancel out likely 10 Wrights. No doubt voiced by
a stammering American.

Patrick –

If I discover/confirm pard has 4 KCs, then I am bidding not 7H and not 7S but 7N.

Obviously, whichever major Grand I might bid will — thanx to TOCM ™ — find the opening leader’s partner void in the major I did NOT bid.

However, with 4KCs, I can count 5D + 7H + 1D + 1C = 14

Hi Patrick,

I think the 5N GSF copes on the sequence I suggested although there is always the nightmare possibility that South has S10xxxxx A Kx AKJxor similar. If he has 6S, though, then a 1-1 break at least sees 6S make. If they are 2-0 of course, we’ll soon know about it.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Jim2, I can honestly understand why you would choose 7N whenever possible because of TOCM ….but this hand is the exception as you say..14 trks. Bridge is always more interesting thanks to your input. Cheers Patrick.

Hi Bobby,Thanks for your thoughts on the subject matter. Regards Patrick
