Hi Bobby,

Are there any spare bids in most systems which would let North describe a hands with points to spare and/or poor trumps thus avoiding the risk of a 5-3 or even 4-4 major fit when 3N is better? Just wondering – perhaps some sort of tweak to Smolen?

This may seem like gilding the lily, and well played by South today, but I suspect such accidents are quite frequent.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

Yes, this hand might fit yesterday’s quote in magnitude, to just denounce the probability of the play (as a bridge columnist fancies), but, in merely mentioning the make,
would be thought of, as a filthy lie, to which might strike
a truth nerve.

With reality, composing bridge hands reminds me of a long ago expression, “If you believe that, here is another one I want to relate”, which could dignify a writer’s desire to as you, so intelligently said, “gild the lily”.

In any event, and upon swallowing a career of listening to revisited bridge hands, the separation of truth and fiction, is indeed a small commodity.
