Hi Bobby,
Genuinely shocking that a top class player should make such an error but I just found a description of George Duboin playing S XX with:
KQ98xx AQ9xxx x None opposite AJx 10x AQJxx Q10x in dummy. Teh D10 was led and declarer played a heart to the A but didn’t cash a round of trumps and then led another heart. West won with the HJ, East following and played the HK. If trumps are 4-0. declarer has to ruff low in dummy but, if not, he must ruff high. If he’d cashed the SA at T2, he’d have found the 4-0 trump break. As it was, he ruffed with the SJ and had to cash the S10 and got the bad news. Ouch!
Regards,
Iain
Hi Iain,
Just possibly suggesting that before a recent talked about difficult hand of bridge ia laid to rest, no doubt, it is both usually educational and great fun to learn where, when, and who were involved. But to then be sure who were the villains and the heroes, even after learning their monikers, becomes a study in which name or names were friends or enemies of the storyteller.
Both of them will likely take their place as questionable, depending on their
reputation with the player doing the description.
Hi Iain & Everyone,
Starting with the new year, I arranged for Barry Rigal, a great friend and even a better bridge writer to take over for me as editor of the column above.
No one, in my considered opinion, can rival him in almost everything BRIDGE
Old age is just too much a burden, and thanks to so many of you for being bridge oriented and, even more important, loyal.
Hi Bobby,
Thanks for that and I remember last talking to him about 1983 when I was playing in England Junior trials with a guy called Steve Green who has (in horse racing terms) trained on rather better than I have. Barry was very good even then and has been in the US for quite some time now. I’m sure he’ll be a worthy successor but I think you’re entitled to a bit of R & R if you want.
Many thanks for all your efforts, advice and replies over the years and all the best for 2025 and beyond. Have you warned Barry about TOCM though?
Regards,
Iain
ACKKKKKKK!!!
Hi, Bobby.
Old age – yes, that is the reason that I quit playing several years ago. But I have always followed you hear.
I trust that you had a merry Christmas and that our God will give you a good many happy new years (and to all your readers).
Hello Bobby Sir
Your column, advice and comments have been very useful in my bridge journey. Will miss you. Thanks for everything and best wishes for years ahead.
