Hello Bobby
A basic question about Captaincy and Partnership Discipline:
After you open a strong 1NT, there is interference from Opps and you hear nothing from Partner (Captain).
With what kind of holding, and under what circumstances, if any, might the 1NT opener balance back into the auction?
Thanks
Hi Clarksburg,
I’ll make it an easy answer to an easy question: While holding: s. Kxx, h. AQJxx
d. xx c. KQJ and opening 1NT 15-17 but hearing it go P, P, 2D (natural) I would definitely bid 2 hearts and frown on someone who would not bid the same way.
I understand that some players (holding this hand) would cry out that to bid again is violating making a limit bid and then letting partner make the future decisions, but playing good (meaning winning) bridge should DEMAND that while bridge, in effect, being the greatest mind game ever, there is always plenty of room for winners to deviate from established disciplines in order to be a tough enough opponent for them to, at the very least, have to work up a sweat in order to beat your partnership. Nothing real fancy, just always being practical and not miss chances, which also means to stick your neck out, when it appears to be the right time.
to further your partnership judgment.
Hi Bobby, Clarksburg,
I don’t think any reasonable partner could object to a bid of 2H on the hand quoted (although if the 1N bidder’s LHO turns up with K109x(x) and wields the big stick they may try. Much depends on the partner; I remember trying somethign much more far out many years ago, passing a forcing bid on purpose and saying I’d taken a view as I put dummy down. I was told to het new glasses.
Regards,
Iain
