Hi Bobby,
The BWTA advice works on the main column hand too today – 3N is cold. Getting there is tricky though!
Regards,
Iain
Hi Iain,
While I totally agree with your comment (101%) I think a different adjective than “tricky” should be used and changed to logical.
Principle reason given for it, at least by me, is that sure, partner can opt to risk 3NT, hoping his long and solid spades can lead to the best making game contract., although not 100% since yes, he could have s. J1098x, h. AQ9, d. KJ10, c. AK, but experience (or loose talk) like here, may, at the very least, help most partnerships to appreciate random happenings which occur, as to the feeling one gets a majority of times, before the dummy is faced.
Narrowing down the deciding line to practically is only another way of greatly evaluating
the advantage of having to score up only nine tricks instead of ten. And yes, my giving excellent spade spots (to the smaller ones) is just another way it may become possible to score up the contract by establishing two tricks in spades (although likely not to matter except to keep the defense from taking four tricks there, instead of only three).
Seeing how significant it would be with this hand to discourage West from leading a 3rd or even 2nd heart, how would you do that (make the best possible signal)?
Play your higher heart on the first trick?
Hi David,
Let us assume that we are playing normal signals with high first, a come on, signalling positive in that suit, or, if count, an even number, then (because we cannot beat the 10 of trumps in the dummy, the card declarer is SURE to trump the third heart lead with, we need to play the 4 first, nudging partner to switch, rather than even think of continuing with hearts and hopefully choosing clubs rather than diamonds for his switch.

Thanks for tuning in and hope to hear from you again, and soon.
Thank you for the explanation, Bobby!
As usual, you’re a terrific teacher.
I’ll be around…
