Hi Bobby,

The text implies East played up the line in hearts. I know it often makes sense not to give count in a suit that declarer leads, but in this case, East knows that South and West have ten hearts between them and South knows that East started with one or two hearts. So should East give count in this situation?

It seems to only help his partner who may have been misled into believing his partner started life with something like 9-8-2 in a weak, balanced hand. True, West might have wondered why his partner would bid 1NT instead of 2H at his first turn, but why not paint him a clear picture so he knows what South already knows?

Best,

Jeff
