Hi Bobby,

On BWTA, how close is the hand to replyying a positive 3C? An extra club perhaps or change the CK to the CA? I’ve found there is a growing modern tendency to automatically relay here with 2D which (to me FWIW) negates the point that bidding should be an excahnge of information. If you’re going to bid the same way (2C form partner 2D 2H then 2S) with 10xxxxx xx xxx xx and AQJxx Q J10xx Qxx (the latter is surely a clear cut 2S reply) how on earth can parter judge matters and how do you catch up apart from punting something?

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

No doubt, even without playing a forcing 1 club system, (which I had grown to prefer,) the normal 2 club strong system usually incorporates a 2 heart response to show almost absolutely nothing in the way of high cards with a lower 2 diamond response a mere smattering of perhaps a couple of queens and a 5+ card weak suit to boot.

Furthermore, since 2 clubs generally forces to game (exception): 2NT rebid (22-24) there will (or should be) at least some room for describing a long suit will little to nothing else.

Simply put, since 1 club incorporates much more room to roam, it, aside from lending itself to usually NV preemption,
works better to carefully check out possible slams, due to the extra bidding room necessary to deliver the right information.

The above is just a general discussion of why and how and not to cater to specific hands which become more difficult while holding the wrong suits to keep it as low as possible while trying to describe.

Yes punting is sometimes necessary, but in truth, one must learn to incorporate that art to its strongest advantage, usually depending on both partners starting out and rigidly remaining consistent while holding both the strong and weak hands.

IOW, knowing your partner’s proclivities for being aggressive and conservative is worth an extra fathom as long as flights of fancy DO NOT exist!

Thanks for your delve! The two hands you describe are so different and, of course with only five good spades and nothing else,(AQJxx, for example and held by the responding hand, should go positive immediately).
