Hi Bobby,

Credit to West for a sensible lead on that sequence but there is a simple answer to BWTA – play a mini (10-12) 1NT which allows you to open this sort of dross. I’m not sure I’d recommend it except at pairs mind you, and even then only NV, but in my younger crazy days I did play it with 1 partner at all vulnerabilities at matchpoints, along with the obligatory redouble as first stage rescue or for real. After all minus 1600 once in a while (off 3 XX when there was no escape) is only the one bad score and the perverse nature of pairs scoring means the small gains soon outweigh the odd bloodbath.

I have grown rather saner now, though.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

Yes mini 1NT openings cause many varied results, except for pushes.

You, sane, c’mon be realistic.

Some play to win, others play for fun, with the goal of trying to be right more often than the opponents.

Like Al Roth used to often say, Vulnerability is for children, but, if so, more kids would win then they do.

Hope you have kicked Covid by now. Sounds like it and if so, welcome back!

Always thanks for your continued presence.
