Hi everyone,

This hand and its handling in the bidding, might represent a possible alternative attitude to consider.

Simply put and after due consideration, but sometime before South’s fourth bid (5 diamonds), South might instead decide to risk a seemingly confident 3NT, even though deep down he (or she) knows very well it is not close to being thought not to be a gamble.

Being confident, might be what it takes for West not to lead a high spade, choosing instead either a low spade or whatever else he may consider (here, the jack of hearts).

Obviously, with this hand, 5 diamonds is far superior to 3NT as a final contract, but listening to the bidding up to then, that fact is unknown, depending on the entire layout of the cards.

The above is just a thought process and certainly open to discussion, but history and experience dictates me to offer the above consideration.

When gambling on finding the right final contract, try one’s best not to give away where the fear exists, by not studying at the wrong time.

Good luck to all who decide to look for these situations which apply.
