HI Bobby,

On massive hand’s query there is another reason to open just 1C on the last hand if the black suits were reversed. There are players out there who will strain to excess to bid after 1C P P and who will probably regret forgetting that silence can be golden.

I recall trying to explain to a partner who was rather like that the flip side. Suppose you are at favourable with a 3-3-3-4 10 count (say) and the auction starts 1C P P. If partner is short of clubs, they are clearly weak as they haven’t bid so leave the oppo somewhere relatively harmless. If partner has longer clubs the oppo may be in a rotten fit vulnerable with declarer facing rubbish although probably holding a fair hand so +200 will do nicely.

regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

Between your truthful words and your obvious natural bridge “feel” “by George”, at least in my judgment, you’ve GOT IT.

While only extending your bridge “truths”, the players who would not chirp 1 spade with s. KQJ9x, h. xx, d. Qxxx, c. xx over RHO’s 1 club opening, regardless of vulnerability, are left wondering why they are not as “lucky” as others, instead of likely having been taught how to lose instead of, at the very least, having a chance to succeed.

Bridge is simply a “bidder’s” game rather than one who prides himself of never letting partner down with what he has learned to expect from you.

Loose and aggressive are often two valuable tools in both life and bridge. especially if one wants to succeed.
