Hi Bobby,

North’s judgement really was having an away day here when he didn’t double 4H but clearly East was wrong to double unless he was going to slip West a trump under the table for the opening lead.

Just out of interest how many does 4H X go for on best defence assuming West ruffs the SK at T1 and leads a club? Both double dummy and single dummy lines would be interesting as clearly, seeing all the cards, West can ruff the 2nd round of spades, cash one top heart and take a ruffing finesse in clubs.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Iain,

My guess is only down one against good defense and competent guesses by the declarer.

However, in the heat of battle, particularly with seasoned players, it may vary somewhere between making, down one and down 2.

When three of four of the players have close decisions to make in the bidding, there are almost always different final contracts reached in one way or the other, causing
speculation in the play to wildly occur.

Not really like horseracing, where pedigree may naturally determine good play from the other.
