Hi Bobby,

A shame for Barry Rigal, who I remember meeting many years ago, but he shouldn’t have held the CQ but the CJ or a smaller card instead. Then the finesse isn’t an option although an initial club lead would mess up the end position so that he’d have had to get the spades right, although that is long odds on.

Regards,

Iain

Hi Dear Mr Wolff
the club finesse is not needed at all. The show up squeeze is bound to succeed unless east committed solecism of bidding three hearts with a side four carded spade suit and west having club K, a rather exceptional case. And would succeed irrespective of west’s spades are six, five four or three and immaterial who held club K. Quite interesting hand. It would be prosaic to land this slam on club finesse which even Mrs. Guggenheim would bring home on a sunny day

Hi AVRR,

Loved your comment, particularly your use of the “coined word”, solecism and, of course your confidence in Mrs. Guggenheim taking her club finesse the right way.

It would probably be true for the day to have to be sunny for her to have any hand to which she would take all thirteen, even if her partner had the chutzpah to chance her being the declarer.

Hi Bobby, AVRR,

If south held C AJx (or even CAxx) the double show up squeeze still works unless West finds a club lead to mangle the entry position. Even then, I’d expect Barry (whom I remember from many years ago as a fine player and nice guy) to have got the spades right.

Iain
