Hi Bobby,

A minor typo (just trying to prove I’m awake despite festivities) – doesn’t East take the last trick with a heart not a diamond. If South’s hearts were stronger (say AQ109) then east has to be awake enough not to play the HJ on west’s H exit but nice thoughtful defence by West. As you say, these little hands can be fascinating.

All you say is true, including the final intended yes of saving the heart jack in order not to stumble. But perhaps East could have read the opening lead for what it was, maintaining his spade ace for the thirteener.

Although sometimes counting less than crucial, part scores do require much attention since and of course, matchpoints become “big shots” as only overtricks go way up in value, allowing “little things to mean a lot”. “Joni James, seemingly a lifetime ago.
