Hi Bobby,
It is long odds against West having H109 alone but it costs nothing to try. I like the PJ O’ Rourke quote though – he is (OK was) very funny and smart although savagely cynical so might have fitted in well in certain bridge schools.

Hi Iain,
Likely, a bridge player with a many splendored feel (short for talent) can be not knowledgeable of plays which, with nothing to lose, should be made. but are either not thought about, nor ever practiced, can still be a world beater. Providing he counts every hand, is a good partner and when participating, devotes his mental energy directly to the game itself.
At least my take on your comment agreed with me and the critical PJ O’Rourke might
have been exactly how you depicted him, which is a “take no prisoner approach”.
