Hi Dear Mr Wolff
A smal fly appears in the ointment. If east ducks two hearts, south has nine tricks via four spades, two hearts and three diamonds or is it that I am a bit groggy and imagining things?
Regards
HI AVRR,
Good point but maybe South was playing pairs (or BAM), didn’t realise D ruff(s) would doom 4H and felt he needed 430, so hoped C were blocked. Either that or he / she was on autopilot despite the known presence of nearby mountains.
Regards,
Iain
I confess I have been wondering, myself. Why in the world would declarer play a third heart?
That 430 v. 420 was the only thing I could think of, and it seemed really thin.
Hi Jim2,
I looked at LWTA and thought of you. If you lead a small trump as suggested you find the opposing hands are Q8xx xxx 109x AKQx (even AKQJ) opposite AJ9xx xx KJxx xx and you’ve removed any guess in trumps and allowed fast heart discards.
If you cash a top heart against such a possibility, declarer naturally holds the HK and bang goes at least one trick (in a worst case declarer has Kxxx opposite J alone in dummy). Partner’s comments in either case may not be overly helpful
Regards,
Iain
Hi AVRR, Iain, & Jim2,
AVRR, that small fly has grown up and fully matured and you are not a bit groggy, and Iain, I’m not sure what game they were playing, but likely neither did South, and finally Jim2 was trying to bail me out, but while doing so, yes, he is 100% right, since his attempt, or any other excuse, is indeed, thin.
Oh well, perhaps every so often we can endorse another game, certainly not bridge,
but let’s charge it off to Whittier’s masterpiece of a quote. Sad, yes indeed!
